Approximately 150 Nazarenes from the Trinidad and Tobago District participated in a street rally and open air event at the recreational grounds on Sunday, May 26 in the Maracas / St. Joseph community where the district hopes to plant a new church. District Nazarene Youth International (NYI) and Nazarene Missions International (NMI) joined forces to coordinate the day intended to share Christ and draw the attention of the community to the new church.
Rev Paul Bunsee, former District NYI President and current Caribbean Field NYI Coordinator, recently began doing some groundwork in the area Maracas / St. Joseph area.
During the event, a music truck playing joyful gospel music attracted attention to the street rally, which gave church members a chance to pass out tracts, fill connection forms and share the Word of God with those who came to listen.
The later service included music, tassa (a drum ensemble), a “praise party” and messages from Rev. Chaitram Babooram of the Felicity Church of the Nazarene and District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Victor George.
During this time, representatives from the District NMI and the District Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries (SDMI) canvassed the area to connect with other community members and share Christ. They distributed food hampers to five vulnerable families.
District NMI President Leah Hope noted that many local people sat outside their homes to hear what was happening, and others left their homes to come nearer. “Even the few who said they didn’t want to hear about Jesus stood nearby to hear what was said,” she continued. “A number of youths who had gathered for a football match were also listening in from the nearby field.”
