The My House Church of the Nazarene in Guatemala City united with the Only Water justice movement promoted by Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and global Nazarene Youth International (NYI). The movement began a year ago when youth accepted the challenge for 40 days. During this time they drank only water and donated what they had saved by not purchasing other liquids to build water wells in Haiti.
On Sunday, May 21, the NYI decided to join this movement of the whole church. To mark the Day of Only water promoted by the regional NYI, May 20, they held two events. They demonstrated the reality and necessity in Haiti, and then invited the attendees to drink a bottle of water and give their offering. There were not enough bottles of water for the entire congregation, but around 300 people enthusiastically gave what the Lord had given them. In these activities, the church gave $387 with the help of NYI, the district movement coordinator Alejandra Novoa, youth pastors Wendy and Plinio Urizar, and general pastors Elsi and Cesar Ayala.
Youth pastor Wendy Ayala said, “It was so special. We didn’t even have enough bottles of water. The two celebrations on Sunday were directed by the NYI in order to present this movement. The sermon ended with a chellenge: No one is so poor that they cannot give something. That excited me so much! So the church must be present in this. It’s not about the amount, but that the church must be a part of these movements to be merciful and compassionate.”
May God bless their generous hearts and our brothers and sisters in Haiti. We pray that the Lord will bring more people to join this movement of justice.
