The last week of March, a medical journey was held at the Raxruhá Church of the Nazarene in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala; with the collaboration of the “Hands of Love” group, formed by physicians, dentists and nurses from different churches in Washington, USA and Guatemalan doctors:
Dr. Rene Rivas, NCM Coordinator of Guatemala and Dr. Helmer Juárez, NCM Coordinator CA-4 Flied. Also Ms. Susy Juarez, Child Sponsorship Program coordinator for CA -4 Field, assisted in the logistics of the event.
The abundance of patients, as in previous years was great. In 5 days over 800 patients were treated in the general medicine and gynecology, many of which received ultrasound. One hundred and eighty-four patients were treated in the dental clinic where extractions are decreasing, and more attention can be given to cases of dental repairs and cleaning.
In the evening, special attention was given to the children of the church and the community through a Bible School with materials provided by the teachers of the “Hands of Love” group.
Great number of people attended the local church to help in the translation to Kekchí, which is the dominant language in the town of Raxruhá.
The “Hands of Love” group has visited Guatemala for over 15 consecutive years. This time 35 people traveled. During the 4 years that the group has visited Raxruhá, the development of the people in the church and community has been evident. They receive medical care, are given information about hygiene and nutrition and good quality medicines and in adequate amounts are provided.
This year’s “Hands of Love” group donated funds for the drilling of a well in the church ground, which is producing 80 gallons per minute. They also built an elevated water tank for distribution to all church facilities. In addition, members of “Hands of Love” make monthly contributions to support the Child Development Center works in the local church with an attendance of more hundred children.
