The destruction in Puerto Rican communities after Hurricane Maria prompted many aid efforts. One of them was The Magi Project held in the Puerto Rico East District from Jan. 2-4, 2018. The project began in the heart of youth pastor Nestor Hernandez from the Melbourne First Church of the Nazarene, Melbourne, Florida, USA.
The participants distributed around 1900 toys along with pastors and volunteers from Puerto Rican churches with the goal of spreading joy and the love of Christ to children in affected areas. They shared with children in the communities of Guayama, Arroyo, Maunabo, Yabucoa, Humacao and Canóvanas.
The funds for the project were donated through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, the Stamford First Church of the Nazarene in Stamford, Connecticut, the Melbourne First Church of the Nazarene and Teri Kulesa.
Help from the local community leaders was crucial. They were responsible for promoting the event and gathering the children in the designated locations. The children were excited to be visited by the three magi who delivered their gifts.
